The Zika Virus Shows Another Way the Population Explosion Might Be Slowed or Stopped

Mother nature always curbs runaway populations, sooner or later.  How that occurs depends on many factors, and the ways it can occur can be simple or extremely complicated.  One or more diseases could arise that would reduce the birthrate, for example, and that may have saved other overpopulating species from catastrophic collapse before.  Now the Zika virus is reported to reduce fertility in men, and that introduces the idea that maybe the population explosion will be softened a bit if viruses like Zika significantly reduce the human global birthrate.  It is also helpful that Zika does best in warm, tropical climates, as those conditions are prevalent in the parts of the world currently having the highest birthrates.   Continue reading

As Population Peaks There is One Certainty: Things Will Be Messy and Complicated

We humans are clearly overrunning the planet, but few understand or will face what is happening.  As population hits an all-time peak later this century, life on the planet will get much tougher and there will be no simple answers to the problems that will arise or simply increase in severity.  While it is hard to see ahead with any detail, past experience says there will never be a single crisis that challenges humanity like overpopulation does (barring an asteroid impact, a global volcanic surprise, or the sun doing something unexpected).  This is because human nature drives us to want to live better and have more children.  Can we successfully change ourselves to have less offspring and live more sustainably?  Continue reading

The Thirst for Economic Growth is Normal, But It Increases Overpopulation Risks

People all over the world want economic growth, believing it will make them better off, and who can blame them?  But how much bigger can we grow before our global systems begin to come apart at the seams? Continue reading

Overpopulation Drives Economic Inequality

There sure seem to be a lot of people trying to get rich quick these days, with many of them employing methods that are unethical, immoral, or downright criminal.  Injustices abound, but those that involve making and keeping people poor are everywhere, and have become so blatant that some of them have even been written into the laws.  So why are so many people trying to take advantage of others, and of a legal system increasingly rigged to increase the profits of billionaires and billionaire corporations, with an expectation that they can become rich? Will the Internet Be the Key to Defusing the Population Bomb?

Information and education are the keys to making lasting changes in human behavior, and the most powerful information tool in history is the internet.  Initially access was available to those who could afford it, leaving much of the world in the figurative dark.  Around the world, however, people are extending access to others who couldn’t previously afford it.  One interesting way this is being done is by promoting the construction of high-speed data networks using a free book on how to set up and maintain high-speed data networks  called “Wireless Networking in the Developing World“.  Efforts like this, by leveraging the power of the internet, will increase education and establish a consciousness of global  affairs that will hopefully lead people everywhere to regulate their own birth rates.  With luck that will help lower the peak of the population explosion and ease the transition to a sustainable world economy.  Much more than this needs to be done, of course, but this is a critical movement to which we all should contribute, and it should give us all hope.

Here is Evidence the United States is Becoming a Third World Country

The biggest problem facing humanity today is overpopulation, and we’ve been told that the heart of the problem is the extremely high birthrates in third world countries.  The UN’s most recent world population projection provides a list of these countries.  But which third world countries are being discussed?  One of the names will surprise you. How to Get the Population Point Across? Use Hashtag #StopHavingChildren

What can we do about the population explosion?  We hear about the symptoms every day, but nobody talks about the cause.  The media churns along, reporting on increased concern for conservation, climate change effects, immigration, alternative energy sources, etc., and it is disappointing that they will not discuss what’s behind the problems they discuss every day: the exploding population.  It is easy to feel helpless in the face of such a huge problem, but what can we do? Continue reading
